How to export or import SharePoint item permissions using Permission Manager?

With BoostSolutions’ Permission Manager, you can export permission settings from a SharePoint site, list or item, and import them to others.

In this example, there are several items in one SharePoint list and some items do not have permissions. Here we plan to export permission settings from one item and import to items which do not have permissions.

In this article, we will demonstrate how to export and import item permissions settings.

This is a SharePoint list named as ARB Project, there are several items which do not have permissions as following.

Export permission settings from a SharePoint list item

Download the trial version of Permission Manager and install it to your SharePoint server.
Open the Permission Manager platform in a browser.
Navigate to Permission Management and click one list, here we click ARB Project.
Then the items contained in this SharePoint list are shown on the right part.

If the item inherits permissions from its parent, there will be a lock icon; otherwise, the item permission is unique.
Select one item – ARB Module 3 and click Export Permissions.
When a window pops up at the bottom of the explorer, click Save to save the file to your local computer.

Import permission settings to SharePoint list items

Navigate to Permission Management and click one list, here we click ARB Project.
Then the items contained in this SharePoint list are shown on the right part.

If the item inherits permissions from its parent, there will be a lock icon; otherwise, the item permission is unique.
Select two item – ARB Module 1 and ARB Module 2, and click Import Permissions.
When Import Permissions dialog appears, click Browse… to select the file which was exported in previous chapter.

Select Replace original permissions of the scopes option, replace all permission settings of the selected sites, lists or folders.
Click Next to continue, the Import Permissions dialog displays permission settings containing in the xml file as following.
Click Import button.
Wait for a few seconds, a message appears after operation complete.
Enter the item – ARB Module 1 and check the permission settings. The permission settings are imported as following.
