How to keep filter panel expanded in a SharePoint list?

List Advanced Filter a handy tool to filter the needed information in SharePoint list or library. To avoid the trouble of finding the Filter whenever you need, keep the filter panel always expanded in the list or library will be a good choice. List Advanced Filter provides 2 entries to configure the filter settings, one for administrators to set up the default filter settings for end users, the other for end users to customize their own filter settings. In this article, we will demonstrate how to keep filter panel expanded in 2 ways. Now let’s begin.

WHAT YOU'LL GET

The Advanced Filter Panel keeps expanded always whenever the page is loaded.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

The sample data we use for this case

List Advanced Filter works for both SharePoint List and Document Library. For following up the feature we demonstrate in this article, you can create a SharePoint List or a Document Library on your SharePoint site. Here we create a SharePoint list named as Branches with several columns and items as shown below.

Keep filter panel expanded in the list through List Settings

  1. Download the trial version of List Advanced Filter, and install it to your SharePoint server.

  2. Navigate to the Branches list prepared above (or navigate to the Document Library in case you create a Document Library as the sample data).

  3. Click LIST on the Ribbon, then click List Settings in Settings group. (Or click LIBRARY, then click Library Settings in Settings group.)

  4. Then you will be navigated to the List Settings page of the Branches list. On the List Settings page, click Advanced Filter Settings (Powered by BoostSolutions) under General Settings.

  5. Then, you will be navigated to the Configure Filter Panel to configure the default behavior of List Advanced Filter for the current list/library. On the Configure Filter Panel, keep other settings as default, focus on the last section Filter Panel Status, and please check the checkbox for Always keep filter panel expanded. With this checkbox checked, the filter panel will keep expanded whenever the page is load. Click Save to save the change.

  6. Now, let’s navigate to the Branches list again, you will find that the Advanced Filter Panel is expanded. Try to navigate to other list or library within the same site collection, then navigate back to Branches list, you will find that the Advanced Filter Panel is expanded always.

    Note:

The entry for Filter Panel Configuration on the List Settings page (the Advanced Filter Settings) is mainly designed for administrators to set up default filter settings for end users. As an administrator, if you don’t want end users to change the default filter settings, you can select No for Do you want to allow user to change filter setting on this list on the Configure Filter Panel page in step 5.

  7. You can click ITEMS on the Ribbon, then click Advanced Filter in Filter group to show/hide the expanded filter panel based on your needs.

Keep filter panel expanded in the list through the List View page

  1. Download the trial version of List Advanced Filter, and install it to your SharePoint server.

  2. Navigate to the Branches list prepared above (or navigate to the Document Library in case you create a Document Library as the sample data).

If the administrator has set up the default filter settings for end users as we did in above section, then the filter panel will be expanded always. But if the administrator didn’t check the checkbox for Always keep filter panel expanded through List Settings page (the checkbox for this option is unchecked by default), then as an end user, is it possible that we can customize the filter settings based on our specific needs? The answer is definitely Yes. For convenience, end users are allowed to customize their own filter settings right on the list view page.

    Note:

For end users to make customization of the filter settings, the administrator must select Yes for Do you want to allow user to change filter setting on this list on the Configure Filter Panel page in the step 5 in above section.

  3. Click ITEMS on the Ribbon, then click Advanced Filter in Filter group to expand the filter panel.

  4. On the Advanced Filter panel, click on the icon to open the Configure Filter Panel.

  5. Then, the Configure Filter Panel will pop up as shown below. It looks very similar as the Configure Filter Panel we reached through the entry on the List Settings page, but it doesn’t have the first section, the General Settings, that’s because the Configure Filter Panel here is for end users to make customizations of the filter panel, and the Configure Filter Panel through the entry on the List Settings page is for administrators.

  6. Scroll down or maximize the window by clicking on the icon to reach the Filter Panel Status section. Then check the checkbox before Always keep filter panel expanded option. Click Save to save the change.

  7. Then, the filter panel will always be kept expanded in the list as shown below.

    Note:

The entry for Filter Panel Configuration on the List View page (the icon) is designed for end users to customize the filter settings for themselves. As an administrator, make sure you select Yes for Do you want to allow user to change filter setting on this list on the Configure Filter Panel page through List Settings if you want end users to change the default filter settings. And if the Always keep filter panel expanded option is checked through List Settings page, then on the Configure Filter Panel on the List View Page, the Always keep filter panel expanded option will be checked by default, the Configure Filter Panel on the List View Page inherits settings from the Configure Filter Panel on the List Settings Page.
