How to customize password reset email content?

Solution:

Change the relevant resource file can customize the email content. Please follow the steps below:

1. Go to the ‘Reource’ folder from the server side. Normally,

For SharePoint 2010, the direcotry is C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\Resources

For SharePoint 2007, the directory is: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\Resources

For SharePoint 2013, the directory is: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\Resources

2. Then locate the file: SPB.SharePointBoost.PasswordReset.UI.resx , and open with Visual studio

3. In the resouce file, find the property:

UserCustomEmailValidation_ConfirmEmailBody

UserCustomEmailValidation_EmailBody

4. Change the related value to the one desired.

Please note that, for multiple language environment, the file name in Step 2 would be like SPB.SharePointBoost.PasswordReset.UI.de-DE.resx or SPB.SharePointBoost.PasswordReset.UI.en-US.resx , all the related language resx file need to be modified. Also, for multiple WFE server environment, same procedure should be done in each server.

How to change the reset password digits?

The reset password characters doesn’t meet the requirement of the password policy, how to change that?

Solution:

Actually, the reset password follows the minimum password length of the password policy.

For example, if the password policy is set as:

The reset password would be in 7 characters.

Cannot Reset Password after Changing Logon Name in AD

After changing user’s logon name in AD, the user get "User does not exist" erorr, when a user tries to reset his own password. The username and password are correct as the user is obviously able to log into SharePoint.

Solution:

Reason:

The user information list still stores the old information in short period after changing the AD properties. The Password Reset works based on the user information list, so the error shows up when the user try to reset password.

Solution:

The user information list will update automatically later, so after refreshing, the user will be able to reset password.

To upldate the User inforamtion list manually.

1. Go to site settings, click “People and Groups”.

2. Change the GroupID to “0” in the URL, it should be shown the URL like this …/_layouts/people.aspx?MembershipGroupId=3, change 3 to 0 and press Enter.

3. The user will able to see the all users and groups in the list. This list has the same information as the user information list.

4. User is NOT able to reset the password until the name has been updated.

"Failed to send confirmation link, please contact the administrator"

An error message occur when resetting password via email address:

"Failed to send confirmation link, please contact the administrator"

Solution:

Troubleshooting for this issue:

Please make sure that the SMTP settings of Password Reset (not Password Change) has been configured correctly in the settings page. Because the product support only customized SMTP settings but not the SharePoint one.

In Custom SMTP settings, selected ‘Default authentication’ type which is the windows authentication method. Change it to ‘Custom authentication’ may solve the issue.

"Your confirm link has expired or you have already reset your password"

Error message occurs when clicking the confirmation link:

"Your confirm link has expired or you have already reset your password"

Solution:

Possible reasons:

The confirmation link has been clicked once
The confirmation link has expired, it would be valid for 10 hours by default

"Cannot reset password for user: xxxxx"

An error message occurs after entering a user name to reset the password:

"Cannot reset password for user: XXX."

Solution:

Possible reasons:

1. The format entered is not correct. It should be "Domain\username".

2. Password Reset is not configured in Central Administration side. Please follow the online tutorial to initialize the current domain.

Both old and new password is available after changing password

After changing the password via the Password Change, it still allows user to login SharePoint via both old and new password.

Solution:

There is a buffer after changing the password, usually Microsoft SharePoint will keep the old password for 1 hour by default, so during this period, both old and new password work. It happens for huge organization or internaltional companies sometimes.
