{"id":1671,"date":"2011-08-01T18:34:24","date_gmt":"2011-08-01T10:34:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sharepointboost.com\/blog\/?p=1671"},"modified":"2023-07-31T11:40:53","modified_gmt":"2023-07-31T03:40:53","slug":"checking-permissions-for-a-user-or-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.boostsolutions.com\/blog\/checking-permissions-for-a-user-or-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Checking Permissions for a User or Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You can easily find out who has access to what on your  sites and content, and you can quickly determine whether a site, list, or  library contains content with unique permissions.<\/p>\n<p>You can check the permissions settings for any of these:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>An individual (including yourself) or a security group<\/li>\n<li>A site or sub-site<\/li>\n<li>Site content, such as a list or library, or individual item within a list or library<\/li>\n<li>Whether a site, list, or library contains items with unique permissions, and if so, what they are.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong> Tip <\/strong> If you have permission to add Web  Parts to your site, you can add the Site Users Web Part to display all  the people and groups who have access to the site.<\/p>\n<p>Check out the settings below for your preferences:<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Check the permissions for an individual or a security group<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Click <strong>Site Actions<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Site Permissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>Permission Tools<\/strong> tab, click <strong>Check Permissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Type the name of the person or group you want to check, and then click <strong>Check Now<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The <strong>Check Permissions<\/strong> dialog  box displays name of the person or group you checked, along with the  permission levels assigned to them and where the permission levels come  from: That is, whether the person has permissions through membership in a  group, or as an individual.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Toc288817127\" name=\"_Toc288817127\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"_Toc254961036\" name=\"_Toc254961036\"><\/a><a id=\"_Toc288817127\" name=\"_Toc288817127\"><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Check the permissions for a site<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Click <strong>Site Actions<\/strong>, and then click <strong>Site Permissions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The permissions page displays all the users and  security groups with access to the site, along with the permission  levels assigned to them.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Toc288817128\" name=\"_Toc288817128\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"_Toc254961037\" name=\"_Toc254961037\"><\/a><a id=\"_Toc288817128\" name=\"_Toc288817128\"><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Check the permissions for a list<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Open the list or library you want to check.<\/li>\n<li>Under <strong>List Tools<\/strong>, click the <strong>List<\/strong> tab, and then click the <strong>List Permissions<\/strong> button, which is at the far right side of the menu, to go to the list permissions page.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The list permissions page displays all the users  and security groups that have access to the list, along with the  permission levels assigned to them.<\/p>\n<p>This page also indicates whether the list or library inherits permissions or has unique permissions.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Toc288817129\" name=\"_Toc288817129\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"_Toc254961038\" name=\"_Toc254961038\"><\/a><a id=\"_Toc288817129\" name=\"_Toc288817129\"><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Check the permissions for a list item<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Open the list item for which you want to view users and security groups.<\/li>\n<li>Click the item with the permissions you want to check, and then click <strong>Manage Permissions<\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The permissions page displays all the users and  security groups (and their assigned permission levels) that have access  to this piece of content.<\/p>\n<p>This page also indicates whether the item inherits permissions or has unique permissions.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"_Toc288817130\" name=\"_Toc288817130\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><a id=\"_Toc288817130\" name=\"_Toc288817130\"><\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Check to see if a list or library contains items with unique permissions<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Open the list or library you want to check. (<strong>Note:<\/strong> The rest of this procedure uses a library as an example, but you can follow the same steps for a list or an individual item).<\/li>\n<li>On the <strong>Library Tools<\/strong> tab, click <strong>Librar<\/strong>y.<\/li>\n<li>Click the <strong>Library Permissions<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If the list or library contains items with unique permissions, the inheritance alert bar appears, highlighted in yellow.<\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li>Click the <strong>Show me uniquely secured items of this list<\/strong> link to see a list of items with unique permissions.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/office.microsoft.com\/en-us\/sharepoint-server-help\/check-permissions-for-a-person-or-site-HA101794808.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Microsoft Office Blog<\/a> for the tip!
